At beginner level, you can say:

Mi piace.

At intermediate level:

Mi piace molto perché è interessante.

At advanced level, things become more dangerous:

Secondo me hai ragione, però dipende dalla situazione.

Congratulations.

You now have an opinion. 😄

And in Italy, having an opinion is an essential survival skill.

Coffee.

Football.

Politics.

Pasta.

How much pasta should be cooked.

Whether pineapple belongs on pizza.

Especially pineapple on pizza. 🍍🍕

This can only end well.

Geoff: Secondo me, il caffè italiano è troppo piccolo.

Viktor: Non sono d’accordo. È piccolo perché è molto concentrato.

Geoff: Sì, però finisce in tre secondi.

Viktor: Questo è vero.

Geoff: Quindi ho ragione.

Viktor: Non esageriamo.

Geoff: A mio parere, dovrebbero servire almeno mezzo litro.

Sometimes you simply want to say what you think.

Instead of always using:

Penso…

you’ll learn several natural alternatives:

• Secondo me…
• A mio parere…
• Per me…
• Per quanto mi riguarda…
• Penso che…
• Credo che…

You’ll also discover that these expressions are not always interchangeable.

Some are more casual.

Some are more formal.

And some can introduce the famous congiuntivo, which is hiding nearby and waiting for Topic 21. 👀

Lesson 19.2 – Agreeing and Disagreeing 🤝 #

Saying:

No.

is certainly efficient.

But perhaps not always ideal. 😄

In this lesson, you’ll learn how to agree and disagree naturally:

• Sono d’accordo.

• È vero.
• Non sono d’accordo.
• Non proprio.
• Non ne sono così sicuro.
• Capisco il tuo punto di vista, però…

You’ll also learn how to make disagreement sound less aggressive.

An opinion becomes much stronger when you explain why.

Compare:

Secondo me questa macchina è migliore.

with:

Secondo me questa macchina è migliore perché consuma meno, costa meno da mantenere e ha più spazio.

Now we have an argument.

You’ll learn how to use:

• perché…
• infatti…
• per esempio…
• per questo motivo…
• inoltre…
• il punto è che…
• il problema è che…

And most importantly:

how to organize your thoughts without starting every sentence with:

E poi… e poi… e poi… 😄

Opinion vs Fact 🧐 #

There is also an important difference between a fact and an opinion.

Fact #

Roma è la capitale d’Italia.

Not much to argue about.

Opinion #

Roma è la città più bella d’Italia.

Now we have a problem.

Useful expressions such as secondo me and a mio parere make it clear that you are expressing your personal point of view.

Mi piace.

You should be able to say something like:

Secondo me è una buona idea perché è semplice ed economica. Capisco però che non tutti siano d’accordo.

That is already a completely different level of Italian.
