Lesson 19.1: Giving Your Opinion 💭 #

Sometimes Italian is easy.

Someone asks:

Ti piace?

You answer:

Sì.

Conversation finished. 😄

But at an advanced level, we want a little more.

Instead of simply saying:

È bello.

you can say:

Secondo me, è molto bello.

or:

A mio parere, è una delle parti più interessanti della città.

Now you are not just describing something.

You are expressing your point of view.

1. Secondo me #

One of the most useful expressions in Italian is:

Secondo me…

It means:

In my opinion…

It is very common in everyday conversation.

Examples #

Secondo me, questo ristorante è troppo caro.
In my opinion, this restaurant is too expensive.

Secondo me, dovremmo partire prima.
In my opinion, we should leave earlier.

Secondo me, Geoff beve troppo caffè.

Geoff:

Secondo me, questa frase non è necessaria. ☕️😄

Important #

After secondo me, you normally continue with a normal sentence.

Secondo me, è una buona idea.

Secondo me, hai ragione.

Secondo me, dobbiamo aspettare.

You do not need che.

2. Per me #

Another simple expression is:

Per me…

Depending on the context, it can mean:

• for me;
• in my opinion;
• as far as I’m concerned.

Examples #

Per me, possiamo andare domani.

Per me, questa soluzione è migliore.

Per me, la pizza senza formaggio è ancora pizza.

Viktor:

Attenzione. Stai entrando in territorio pericoloso. 🍕😄

Per me is very common and informal.

It is especially useful when discussing choices or preferences.

3. A mio parere #

A slightly more formal expression is:

A mio parere…

Meaning:

In my opinion / In my view…

Examples #

A mio parere, questa decisione è sbagliata.

A mio parere, il problema principale è il costo.

A mio parere, dovremmo valutare un’altra possibilità.

This expression works well in:

• discussions;
• formal conversations;
• written Italian;
• professional situations.

Compare:

Secondo me costa troppo.

with:

A mio parere, il prezzo è eccessivo.

Same general meaning.

Different style.

4. Dal mio punto di vista #

Another useful expression is:

Dal mio punto di vista…

Literally:

From my point of view…

It is useful when you want to emphasize that you are presenting your perspective, not an absolute truth.

Examples #

Dal mio punto di vista, il progetto è troppo complicato.

Dal mio punto di vista, abbiamo bisogno di più tempo.

Dal mio punto di vista, Pishi non dovrebbe dormire sul tavolo.

Pishi:

Dal mio punto di vista, il tavolo è mio. 🐈

5. Per quanto mi riguarda #

A more advanced expression is:

Per quanto mi riguarda…

It means:

As far as I’m concerned…

Examples #

Per quanto mi riguarda, possiamo iniziare subito.

Per quanto mi riguarda, non c’è nessun problema.

Per quanto mi riguarda, la decisione finale spetta a Geoff.

Geoff:

Finalmente un sistema ragionevole. 😄

This expression is useful when talking about your own position in a situation.

6. Penso che… #

Now things become slightly more interesting.

You can also say:

Penso che…

Meaning:

I think that…

Examples #

Penso che sia una buona idea.

Penso che Geoff abbia ragione.

Penso che dobbiamo parlarne.

Wait.

Why do we have:

sia

and:

abbia

instead of:

è

and:

ha?

Because expressions such as penso che can introduce the congiuntivo.

But don’t panic.

7. Credo che… #

Very similar:

Credo che…

Meaning:

I think / I believe that…

Examples #

Credo che sia troppo tardi.

Credo che abbia dimenticato le chiavi.

Credo che possiamo trovare una soluzione.

In everyday conversation, penso che and credo che are often very close in meaning.

You don’t need to spend seventeen minutes deciding which one to use.

That would be very advanced Italian procrastination. 😄

8. Mi sembra che… #

Another useful expression is:

Mi sembra che…

Meaning:

It seems to me that…

This is useful when you are not completely certain.

Examples #

Mi sembra che sia chiuso.

Mi sembra che qualcosa non funzioni.

Mi sembra che Geoff stia cercando un’altra scusa per bere un caffè.

Geoff:

Non è una scusa. È una necessità medica.

Viktor:

Mi sembra che tu abbia inventato questa regola. 😄

Strong Opinion vs Soft Opinion #

Not all opinion expressions have the same strength.

Compare:

Direct #

Secondo me, è sbagliato.

Softer #

Mi sembra che non sia la soluzione migliore.

More personal #

Dal mio punto di vista, non funziona molto bene.

More formal #

A mio parere, sarebbe preferibile un’altra soluzione.

This is important because advanced Italian is not only about grammar.

It is also about tone.

Asking Someone’s Opinion ❓ #

A conversation becomes much more natural when you ask the other person what they think.

Useful questions include:

Tu cosa ne pensi?
What do you think?

Che ne pensi?
What do you think about it?

Qual è la tua opinione?
What’s your opinion?

Secondo te?
What do you think?

Come la vedi?
How do you see it?

The last one is more conversational.

Example #

Viktor: Secondo me dovremmo partire alle sette.

Geoff: Alle sette?!

Viktor: Sì. Tu cosa ne pensi?

Geoff: Penso che alle sette io stia ancora dormendo.

Viktor: È esattamente il problema. 😄

You can even use a person’s name:

Secondo Geoff, il caffè italiano è troppo piccolo.

Secondo Viktor, Geoff si lamenta troppo del caffè.

Nobody is surprised. ☕️

Don’t Overuse “Io penso” ⚠️ #

English speakers often want to say:

Io penso…

every time they express an opinion.

It is not wrong.

But Italian often drops the subject pronoun because the verb already tells us who is speaking.

Instead of:

Io penso che sia interessante.

you can simply say:

Penso che sia interessante.

And instead of repeating penso constantly, vary your language:

Secondo me…

A mio parere…

Mi sembra che…

Dal mio punto di vista…

This makes your Italian sound much more natural.

Geoff: Secondo me dovremmo andare al ristorante australiano.
