Lesson 19.3: Supporting Your Argument 🧩💬 #
You already know how to say:
Secondo me, questa macchina è migliore.
Good.
But then someone asks:
Perché?
And suddenly:
Eh… perché sì.
😄
At an advanced level, an opinion becomes much stronger when you can explain why you think something.
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to:
- give reasons;
- add examples;
- explain consequences;
- introduce another point;
- clarify the main problem;
- organize an argument naturally.
1. Perché – Giving a Reason #
The simplest way to support an opinion is:
perché
Meaning:
because
Example #
Secondo me questa macchina è una buona scelta perché consuma poco.
Preferisco vivere in campagna perché c’è meno traffico.
Penso che dovremmo partire presto perché domani ci sarà molto traffico.
Simple.
Useful.
Essential.
2. Avoid “Perché” Five Times 😄 #
Imagine this:
Mi piace questa macchina perché è grande perché ho una famiglia grande perché abbiamo bisogno di spazio perché…
Stop.
The sentence is now requesting emergency assistance. 🚑
At advanced level, try to vary your connectors.
Instead of repeating perché, you can use:
- dato che…
- visto che…
- siccome…
- infatti…
- per questo motivo…
We’ll explore some of these now.
3. Infatti #
Infatti
can mean:
- in fact;
- indeed;
- as a matter of fact.
It is often used to confirm or explain something you just said.
Example #
Questa macchina non è molto conveniente. Infatti, consuma moltissimo.
First you make the claim.
Then you support it.
Another example:
Dobbiamo partire presto. Infatti, domani è previsto molto traffico.
Geoff’s Logic ☕️ #
Geoff: Devo bere un altro caffè.
Viktor: Perché?
Geoff: Sono stanco.
Viktor: Hai già bevuto quattro caffè.
Geoff: Infatti. E sono ancora stanco.
Viktor: Non credo che infatti funzioni così. 😄
4. Per esempio #
To support an argument, examples are extremely useful.
Use:
Per esempio…
Meaning:
For example…
Example #
Ci sono molti modi per praticare italiano. Per esempio, puoi leggere, ascoltare podcast o parlare con qualcuno.
Questa città offre molte cose interessanti. Per esempio, ci sono musei, ristoranti e molti eventi.
Examples make your argument more concrete.
Compare:
Studiare italiano online è utile.
with:
Studiare italiano online è utile. Per esempio, puoi ascoltare madrelingua ogni giorno e fare esercizi quando hai tempo.
Much stronger.
5. Ad esempio #
You can also use:
Ad esempio
It means the same thing as:
Per esempio
Example #
Ci sono diverse alternative. Ad esempio, possiamo andare in treno.
Both are common.
You don’t need to choose a favorite.
Italian grammar will survive either way. 😄
6. Per questo motivo #
When something produces a consequence, you can use:
Per questo motivo…
Meaning:
For this reason…
Example #
La macchina consuma molto. Per questo motivo, preferirei un altro modello.
Domani devo alzarmi alle cinque. Per questo motivo, stasera non posso uscire.
This connects:
reason → consequence
7. Quindi #
A very common connector is:
quindi
Meaning:
- therefore;
- so;
- consequently.
Example #
È già tardi, quindi dobbiamo andare.
Questa macchina ha sette posti, quindi sarebbe comoda per una famiglia numerosa.
Geoff ha dimenticato le chiavi, quindi siamo tutti fuori casa.
Geoff: Non è dimostrato che sia colpa mia.
Viktor: Le chiavi sono nella tua tasca.
Geoff: Interessante sviluppo. 😄
8. Inoltre #
When you want to add another argument, use:
Inoltre…
Meaning:
Furthermore / Moreover / In addition
Example #
La casa è economica. Inoltre, è vicino alla stazione.
Questo lavoro è interessante e, inoltre, offre possibilità di crescita.
This is especially useful in:
- formal discussion;
- writing;
- structured arguments.
In everyday speech, Italians may also simply use:
In più…
9. In più #
A more conversational alternative to inoltre is:
In più…
Example #
Costa poco e, in più, consuma poco.
Il ristorante è buono. In più, è vicino a casa.
Compare:
More formal #
Inoltre, il prezzo è conveniente.
More conversational #
In più, costa poco.
10. Il punto è che… #
One extremely useful advanced expression is:
Il punto è che…
Meaning:
The point is that…
Use it when you want to focus on the main idea.
Example #
Il punto è che non abbiamo abbastanza tempo.
Il punto è che la macchina costa poco, ma richiede molte riparazioni.
Il punto è che Geoff non vuole un espresso. Vuole una tazza da mezzo litro.
Finally, someone understands. ☕️😄
11. Il problema è che… #
Very similar:
Il problema è che…
Meaning:
The problem is that…
Example #
Il problema è che domani lavoro.
Il problema è che questa soluzione costa troppo.
Il problema è che nessuno ha controllato i documenti.
It lets you identify the main obstacle clearly.
12. La cosa importante è che… #
Another useful structure:
La cosa importante è che…
Meaning:
The important thing is that…
Example #
La cosa importante è che tutti capiscano il problema.
La cosa importante è che troviamo una soluzione.
This is useful when you want to bring the discussion back to the main objective.
13. Da una parte… dall’altra… #
When an issue has advantages and disadvantages, use:
Da una parte… dall’altra…
Meaning approximately:
On the one hand… on the other hand…
Example #
Da una parte, vivere in città è comodo. Dall’altra, il traffico può essere stressante.
Da una parte, questa macchina costa poco. Dall’altra, ha molti chilometri.
This is excellent for balanced arguments.
14. Da un lato… dall’altro… #
Another very common version is:
Da un lato… dall’altro…
Example #
Da un lato, lavorare da casa è comodo. Dall’altro, può essere difficile separare lavoro e vita privata.
Same idea.
Slightly more structured.
15. Anche se… #
You can acknowledge a contrasting fact using:
anche se
Meaning:
even if / although
Example #
Mi piace questa macchina, anche se consuma molto.
Vorrei andare al mare, anche se domani farà freddo.
Geoff vuole un altro caffè, anche se ne ha già bevuti cinque.
Some situations are beyond grammar. 😄
16. Però / Tuttavia #
You already know:
però
For a more formal contrast, you can use:
tuttavia
Meaning:
however
Compare #
È una buona soluzione, però costa molto.
More conversational.
È una buona soluzione; tuttavia, presenta alcuni svantaggi.
More formal.
Both are useful.
17. In realtà #
Sometimes you need to correct an assumption or add a more precise fact.
Use:
In realtà…
Meaning:
Actually / In reality…
Example #
Geoff: Questa macchina sembra nuova.
Viktor: In realtà, ha quindici anni.
Geoff: Quindici?
Viktor: Sì.
Geoff: È nuova dentro.
Viktor: Dentro ci sono ancora le cassette musicali.
Geoff: Vintage. 😄
18. Dato che #
Dato che…
means:
Given that / Since…
Example #
Dato che domani lavoro, stasera preferisco restare a casa.
Dato che il prezzo è molto alto, dovremmo valutare altre possibilità.
It is useful for giving background reasons.
19. Visto che #
Very common in spoken Italian:
Visto che…
Meaning:
Since / Considering that…
Example #
Visto che siamo già qui, possiamo entrare.
Visto che piove, prendiamo la macchina.
Visto che Geoff ha già ordinato il caffè, aspettiamo.
Viktor: Quale caffè?
Geoff: Il sesto.
Of course. ☕️
20. Siccome #
Another common way to introduce a reason:
Siccome…
Meaning:
Since / Because…
Example #
Siccome domani devo lavorare, vado a letto presto.
Siccome non abbiamo molto tempo, prendiamo il treno.
Important:
siccome often comes at the beginning of the sentence.
✅
Siccome piove, resto a casa.
Building an Argument 🧱 #
A good argument often has several parts.
1. Opinion #
Secondo me, questa macchina è una buona scelta.
2. Reason #
Consuma poco e ha molto spazio.
3. Example or evidence #
Per esempio, ha sette posti e un bagagliaio abbastanza grande.
4. Additional point #
Inoltre, i costi di manutenzione sembrano ragionevoli.
5. Conclusion #
Per questo motivo, penso che valga la pena considerarla.
Now compare that with:
È bella.
Advanced level unlocked. 🔓😄
A Complete Example 🚗 #
Question #
Secondo te, conviene comprare una macchina usata?
Weak answer #
Sì.
Very efficient.
Not very convincing.
Better answer #
Secondo me, comprare una macchina usata può essere conveniente perché costa meno di una nuova.
Advanced answer #
Secondo me, comprare una macchina usata può essere conveniente perché il prezzo iniziale è generalmente più basso. Inoltre, scegliendo un modello affidabile e controllando bene la manutenzione, si possono evitare molti problemi. Tuttavia, è importante verificare le condizioni del veicolo prima dell’acquisto. Per questo motivo, io farei sempre controllare la macchina da un meccanico.
Now we have:
- opinion;
- reason;
- additional argument;
- contrast;
- conclusion.
Beautiful.
Geoff has already bought the car while we were explaining it. 😄
21. Organizing Your Thoughts #
Useful connectors can be grouped by function.
Giving a reason #
- perché
- dato che
- visto che
- siccome
Giving an example #
- per esempio
- ad esempio
Adding information #
- inoltre
- in più
Showing a consequence #
- quindi
- per questo motivo
Showing contrast #
- però
- tuttavia
- anche se
- invece
Focusing on the main idea #
- il punto è che
- il problema è che
- la cosa importante è che
22. Don’t Build Monster Sentences 👹 #
Advanced Italian does not mean making every sentence 73 words long.
Bad idea:
Secondo me questa macchina è buona perché costa poco e inoltre ha sette posti e quindi possiamo comprarla anche se consuma un po’ troppo però il problema è che…
Stop.
The sentence is still alive, but barely. 😄
Better:
Secondo me, questa macchina è una buona scelta perché costa poco e ha sette posti. Tuttavia, consuma abbastanza. Il problema è che dobbiamo capire quanto spenderemmo realmente ogni mese.
Advanced language should be clear, not complicated for the sake of being complicated.
23. Mini Debate: City or Countryside? 🏙️🌳 #
Geoff: Secondo me, vivere in campagna è meglio.
Viktor: Perché?
Geoff: Perché c’è meno traffico e più tranquillità.
Viktor: È vero. Tuttavia, in città hai più servizi.
Geoff: Sì, però in campagna hai più spazio.
Viktor: Anche questo è vero. Il problema è che spesso hai bisogno della macchina.
Geoff: Perfetto. Mi piace guidare.
Viktor: Anche quando c’è traffico?
Geoff: No.
Viktor: Quindi torniamo al punto di partenza. 😄
24. From Opinion to Argument #
Compare these levels.
Level 1 #
Mi piace.
Level 2 #
Secondo me è bello.
Level 3 #
Secondo me è bello perché è semplice.
Level 4 #
Secondo me è una buona soluzione perché è semplice ed economica. Inoltre, richiede poca manutenzione.
Level 5 #
Secondo me è una buona soluzione perché è semplice ed economica. Inoltre, richiede poca manutenzione. Tuttavia, prima di decidere, sarebbe utile confrontarla con altre alternative.
That’s the goal.
Not longer Italian.
Better-organized Italian.

Remember 🧠 #
An argument doesn’t need to be complicated.
A simple structure works very well:
Secondo me…
perché…
Per esempio…
Inoltre…
Tuttavia…
Per questo motivo…
And if you forget everything else during a discussion:
Il punto è che…
Then pause dramatically.
Everyone will assume something important is coming. 😄
Ready to Practice? ✍️ #
You have opinions.
You can agree.
You can disagree.
Now let’s see whether you can actually defend your ideas.
